Poems For My People – What is this project? Since October 2022, I’ve been writing poems for people at their request, usually in live settings and mostly with my vintage typewriters. This is something I’d wanted to do since I read about it back in the 90s, but I didn’t feel qualified or “allowed,” so I stuffed that desire, wrote in secret, and trained as an English teacher–helping other people to become the writers they’ve dreamed of being. Teaching teenagers moved into coaching adults (still teenagers, but they just look a little different on the outside) to become writers. In 2022, several clients in a row told me they wanted to write more poetry or publish a collection of poems. Each poetry conversation scratched away the surface where I’d been hiding my poet self. Eventually (but, really–suddenly!), someone gave me a typewriter. If I needed a sign, I literally got it: the blue Smith Corona Classic 12 typewriter I needed. Thinking I’d just do a few poems and move on, I gave myself a HUGE (unrealistic-feeling) goal of three books, each a collection of 100 poems. One would be for community members/strangers, one for friends and family, and one for my fellow writers. …Pretty early on, I realised 300 poems was hardly any at the rate I was going. This would be just the start of the project…I changed my huge goal into “a rainbow collection + cloud + pot of gold” 11-book series of Poems For My People. I thought it’d look cool on everyone’s bookshelves. Now that I’m five books in, as of Summer 2025, I can confirm it looks pretty awesome–and, it’s been such a privilege to get to write poems for several hundred people. Musicians on street corners or circus acts balancing or all white statues who turn and wink when you put money in their hat–it’s all busking. I sit in a public place with my notebook and either my blue Smith Corona Classic 12 or red Smith Corona Galaxie typewriter and I write poetry.Want a poem?If you want a poem, let me know when you see me. Sometimes the creative parallel universe takes me deep in and I don’t notice someone waiting right away. Usually this takes somewhere in the range of 15-20 minutes, but sometimes it takes up to 30 minutes.I read your poem out loud.When your poem is finished, I’ll perform it aloud to you and you get to keep the typewritten copy.
